Weekend #2: 25th to 26th of April

Birmingham, GBR - Women

Format

Information about the teams

Spring Tour in the UK looks to be basically UK nationals plus friends. UK teams are well versed in playing one another, and the top 4 always seem to battle it out, with it ultimately coming down to

Bristol Vs Iceni

Smog Vs Spice

For the top 4. Syc, Horizon and LMU often battle it out for the final positions.

Horizon have been on the up, taking a win over SYC last year - but on paper all 3 are "off the paces" of the top 4.

The top 4 teams in the UK could all beat each other on any given day, but it usually does go down to what is expected.

KFUM have a fair roster, with players who have been super successful on the indoor scene - but they struggled to convert this to the outdoor season last year. They have gained back Renata from Bristol Women and have Sophia Eklund - but feel like they are missing the big dogs they need to push. They come in widely unknown, so could shock some people.

A once dominant Gravity struggled over the last few seasons and their once dominance seemingly is over. They have a good zone, and a positive team spirit and can still challenge teams if all goes to plan. Wouldn't be surprised to see an unexpected win in pools.

UK teams have basically battled it out for the GB Women U24 women.  Smog, Iceni and Bristol have all added these young players to their rosters - so it will be great to see these youngsters battle it out against one another.

As ever, there has been some key moving and shaking in the UK scene. Some key shifts have been

  • Iceni have gained Natalie Oldfield from Bristol Women, Alex Niouma and Lizzie Colenso from SMOG due to the 3 women moving to London.

  • Smog have gained Luisa Leyland and Melissa Barnett from Lemmings - plus a new club player in the name of Emily Askham (GB u20)

  • Spice has done their biggest recruitment in the form of coaching - with Rachel Naden and Tom Abrams in their coaching staff. As a young team, this strategic maturity will likely do them a world of good - and I am expecting to see diversity in their play. This paired with their passion and drive could see them really push. Their main player grabs are Hannah Scott from SYC, Freya Lenton from Iceni and Stella Slinger Thompson from BN1.

  • Bristol Women also matching pace with a few key recruits with Rosie Coward and Persophone Pantling from Lemmings, and Katya Chu from SYC. They are also welcoming some junior talent to their squad with GBu20 stand out Mollie Williams.

  • LMU are only entering this to warm up for Masters Worlds - so they will come in with all guns blazing. As a Masters team, it will be interesting to see how they perform against mixed aged teams. Their absolute standout pick up is Hannah Body. An ICENI legend who has made the jump across. Hannah will do so much to bolster the LMU side. They are a team not to be forgotten or underestimated - even if last year they didn't perform to the level I think they anticipated. Some of their roster was on the successful GB Masters Women's team who took gold at Euros last summer.

Information about the teams

Newcastle Brown:

A geo club in the north east of England dating back to 2005, now taking the step onto the European scene. Captain Dylan Spiers has used his experience playing SMOG and GB to build this competitive group. This year we  have some new edition with high level experience; Harry Glasspool (SMOG), Helen Roberts (Reading), Mark Simpson (Alba). There is also some strong young talent on the team looking to build on our debut EUCS season.

Juli Terno - Captain of Hässliche Erdferkel says:

“We are a mix of young and veteran players. We want to use this season to find new connections on the field, grow together as a team and give our newbies the chance to get experience on high level tournament.”

Representing the heart of the Rhineland, frühmix Cologne brings a vibrant mix of rookies and experienced veterans to the Spring Tour. While some of their squad members are currently away at national team tryouts, the team's focus remains on their deep team spirit and integrating fresh talent into their high-energy flow. Currently ranked 5th in Germany, frühmix thrives in the underdog role and is ready to punch above their weight while bringing that signature Cologne joy to the fields of Grenoble.

After two years dedicated to the Open and Women’s categories, the Monkeys are once again embarking on the European and World mixed adventure. We are delighted to kick off this season at home, where we’ll be able to count on the support of our fans.

This year, our team has been renewed with talented young players and we are building our team to prepare WUCC. Weekend goal: reach the semifinals!

Camilo Rachello, Member of the coaching staff of Remix:
“Last year was a tough season. We didn't hit our goals, and that was hard to ignore. Going into this year, we made real changes: new coach, new players, and a different system. We're looking forward to seeing how it plays out at our first tournament in Grenoble.”

Thundering Herd is based in South West London. They have a lot of new faces on the team this year, along with some veteran players who will also be representing the Thundering Herd Masters at WMUCC. After a bit of a rough start to the season at their first domestic tournament in Nottingham in some VERY windy and rainy conditions, they are hoping to do a bit better in the French sunshine!

Information about the teams

This is the competition to watch! Here we have the most high-ranked teams from last year in one place.

The big 5 are:

  • BFD Shout - raining champion

  • Mooncup

  • YAKA

  • Tequila Boom Boom

  • GRUT

All of them have many goals this year, with the World Championships coming in August and the European Championships following in October.

BFD Shout looks like their typical strength, and they are typically very prepared for their tournaments. Last year, they did not give GRUT a chance in the final of the Spring Tour and crowned themself European Champions. Runner-up from last year, Mooncup are bringing even more talent from France and seems to be in full force to make a point with their first performance. Bronze medal winner Yaka brings their many talents, along with new young additions from the French national team, as well as Spanish additions in Aina Perez and Julia Mas. Tequila Boom Boom came in 4th place last year and is building on its homegrown talent from Rimini. Last but not least in that monster of a line-up, GRUT, finished 5th at the Club Finals last year, which definitely was not what they wanted. They never lacked talent and continue to build their depth. Their roster looks nearly complete except for Sarah Eklund.

FABulous, Gentle, WEST, Lillipuc and Zoom Rush have their work cut out for them. They will have to use this tournament to challenge the top 5. If they manage to get a win against them, it will pay out heavily for the rest of the season. FABulous has many new young players who are competing in their first international elite tournament at the Spring Tour. As a team, they’ve continued to develop and acquire new skills during the offseason.

Hornsyld, DEN - Open

Format

Information about the teams

Lau Harbo - captain of Aarhus Ultimate says:

“We’ve been building this team for some years now, consequently being top 2 at nationals. Prepping for WUCC and have one player debuting in an international game this weekend. We’re a tribe of 19 horses ready to rock n roll. Thanks to our women’s team for helping in hosting the tournament.”

Bora prides themself on youth, spirit and intensity. Their top placement at German Nationals was 4th. This weekend they're looking to be put into high value reps for our athletes to gain experience and compete at the international level!

KFK is the team to beat at this tournament. They have taken over after Ragnarok retired. This year is also a Club Worlds season for them and we will follow them closely and might see them at the EUCF at the end of the year.

Hardfisch is the open team from Hamburg. Last season, they placed 4th at the German nationals, marking our best result in recent team history. They want to build on that positive trend and have a strong start to the season with the upcoming tournament in Hornsyld. This year is the first time Hardfisch has managed to attend both the Spring and Summer Tours. We are mostly the same team as last year, with a few additions. This weekend, they will be missing some of our core players because German National team tryouts are taking place at the same time. But they are still aiming for a good result, and with only 5 teams and likely very windy conditions, everything is possible.

Eclipse is a team from the Mooncatchers looking to draw on European experience to create a competitive and fun atmosphere. While their teammates dream of reaching for the moon, they’ll make it disappear!
